EEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW I had this mental image from a bear in one of the latter Dark Tower novels...He's half robot I think? Anyway, he decays and his cranium is filled with these wriggling white worms. Totally different from your blood count I know, but nevertheless it was my image.
